UEFA fines Real Madrid after fan performs Nazi salute at Champions League match

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has imposed a fine of 15,000 euros (approximately $17,000) on Real Madrid following an incident involving a supporter who performed a Nazi salute prior to a Champions League match last week. The disciplinary action was announced on Friday, with UEFA citing "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour" by the club's supporters.

The incident occurred before the second leg of Real Madrid's play-off round victory over Benfica on February 25. A supporter was caught on camera making the Nazi salute in the stands before the match began. Real Madrid subsequently ejected the individual from the stadium.

In addition to the financial penalty, UEFA's disciplinary board has ordered a partial stadium closure affecting 500 seats. However, this measure has been suspended for a one-year probationary period, meaning it will only be enforced if further violations occur within that timeframe.

The first leg of the tie was also marked by an incident of alleged racism directed at Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior by Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni. Reports indicate that Prestianni denies the allegation.

Real Madrid advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League following their victory over Benfica and are set to face Manchester City in the next round.
