Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed provincial governments to take decisive legal action against individuals and entities involved in hoarding petroleum products. The instructions were issued during a high-level meeting on Friday, where the current status of petroleum product stocks in the country was reviewed.
Government urges crackdown on hoarders
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Petroleum provided a comprehensive briefing on the availability of petroleum products, particularly in light of recent regional developments. The briefing indicated that the country currently maintains sufficient reserves to meet national requirements.
Despite the assurance of adequate supplies, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for vigilance against any attempts to create artificial shortages. He instructed provincial authorities to take strict legal measures against those found hoarding petroleum products. The Prime Minister stated that any petrol pump found engaging in such illegal practices should be immediately shut down, have its licence revoked, and face legal proceedings.
Monitoring and coordination measures
The Prime Minister also ordered enhanced monitoring of the movement of petroleum products to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth distribution. He further directed the petroleum minister to visit provinces and coordinate with provincial governments to oversee the implementation of these measures.
Additionally, the federal and provincial governments were urged to work together to conserve petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) products. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to prevent disruptions in supply and to maintain stability in the market.
Officials reiterated that there are currently no shortages of petroleum products in the country. However, the government remains alert to any activities that could lead to artificial scarcity and is prepared to take immediate action against violators.
