CDA requests 45,000 saplings after felling 30,000 trees in Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has formally approached the Ministry of Climate Change to request 45,000 saplings, following the removal of approximately 30,000 fully grown trees in Islamabad. The CDA's director of environment sent a letter to the ministry, listing the indigenous tree species required for the upcoming spring plantation drive.

The species requested include Arjan, Kachnar, Amaltas, Jacaranda, Tecoma, Siris (Shreen), and Phulai. The CDA stated that these saplings are needed to support the spring tree plantation campaign and to replace the paper mulberry trees that were recently removed from various parts of the federal capital.

Reports indicate that nearly 28,000 to 29,000 mature trees were felled by the CDA around four months ago. The civic authority explained that the removal targeted paper mulberry trees, which it described as an invasive species. The CDA maintained that this action was carried out in accordance with orders from the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The large-scale tree felling has prompted public concern and criticism. In response, both the CDA and the Ministry of Climate Change have stated that the removal of paper mulberry trees was necessary and aligned with official directives. The CDA emphasized its commitment to restoring greenery in the city by requesting a higher number of saplings than the trees removed.

The requested saplings are intended to be planted during the spring plantation campaign, with the aim of compensating for the environmental impact of the recent tree removal. The CDA's communication with the Ministry of Climate Change underscores the authority's efforts to address ecological concerns and maintain the city's green cover.
