 ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday appreciated Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan and his team for achieving a 63 percent increase in the revenue of the National Highway Authority (NHA), along with the effective implementation of safety measures on motorways and highways, improvement in service areas and other key initiatives, state media reported.

The prime minister expressed these views while chairing a meeting to review the performance of the National Highway Authority, said a statement issued from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

During the briefing, the prime minister was informed that NHA’s revenue increased from Rs66.8 billion in 2024 to Rs109 billion in the fiscal year 2025, marking a 63 per cent rise. The meeting was told that the significant increase in revenue was achieved through improved toll tax collection and other measures implemented on the prime minister’s directives.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the open and transparent auction of NHA toll plazas was a commendable step and directed the authorities to ensure the highest standards of quality in the repair and maintenance of motorways.

The meeting was further informed that the use of M-Tag on motorways rose from 20 per cent in 2024 to 81 per cent in 2025, reflecting improved digital tolling compliance.

Participants were told that compliance with axle load limits had reached 90 per cent on highways and 95 per cent on motorways, which has helped reduce accidents, lessen pressure on road infrastructure and extend the lifespan of highways.

The briefing also highlighted that, alongside the upgradation of existing service areas on motorways, new service areas are also being developed along national highways to improve facilities for commuters.

The meeting was told that an air ambulance service will be launched on motorways during the current year, while Rescue 1122 services remain available round the clock at all motorway interchanges.

It was further informed that the upgradation of the Lyari Expressway, Thokar Niaz Baig (N-5), and the Islamabad–Murree Expressway has been completed through the NHA’s own budget.

The prime minister appreciated the efforts of the communications minister and his team and directed that all ongoing projects be completed within the stipulated timeframe.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema and other senior government officials.

KP governor calls on PM

Meanwhile, Faisal Karim Kundi, Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and discussed matters of mutual interest.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the overall political situation in the country and matters relating to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa came under discussion during the meeting.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousuf and Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah were also present on the occasion.
