Broad coalition in US calls for human oversight and accountability in AI development

A diverse coalition in the United States, including conservative figure Steve Bannon, progressive groups, labour unions, and faith-based organizations, has jointly issued a declaration outlining principles for the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement was made on Wednesday.

The declaration, coordinated in part by Max Tegmark, founder and chair of the Future of Life Institute, sets forth 34 principles grouped under five main themes: keeping humans in charge, avoiding concentration of power, protecting the human experience, ensuring human agency and liberty, and promoting corporate accountability.

According to reports, the coalition frames its initiative as a response to what it describes as Silicon Valley’s reckless approach to AI deployment. The declaration emphasizes the need for human oversight and warns against the unchecked pursuit of advanced AI systems that could potentially replace human jobs on a large scale.

Max Tegmark stated, “This declaration makes clear AI has incredible opportunities to help humanity flourish like never before.” However, he also cautioned that the current trajectory is a “race to replace,” with a small number of powerful companies openly aiming to develop superintelligent systems capable of replacing every human job.

The coalition’s principles call for measures to ensure that humans remain in control of AI technologies, prevent the excessive concentration of power in the hands of a few corporations, and safeguard the broader human experience. The declaration also stresses the importance of protecting individual agency and liberty, as well as holding corporations accountable for the impacts of their AI systems.

The Future of Life Institute played a key role in bringing together the various groups behind the declaration. The announcement has drawn attention to growing concerns about the social and economic implications of rapid AI advancement, particularly regarding employment and the potential for increased corporate influence.

Sources indicate that the coalition’s effort marks a rare moment of unity among groups with differing political, social, and religious perspectives, all advocating for greater human control and oversight in the development of artificial intelligence.
