The Sialkot Stallionz have officially been renamed as the Multan Sultans, following a formal announcement by Pakistan Super League (PSL) CEO Salman Naseer on Tuesday. The decision comes after a request submitted by the franchise's new CEO, Gohar Shah, marking his first major move since assuming the role.
During a press conference, Naseer explained that Shah had immediately applied for the name change upon his appointment. According to Naseer, the name 'Multan Sultans' had not been available during the initial team auction, which led Shah to select 'Sialkot Stallionz' at that time. "You saw him (Shah) amongst other bidders at the team auction for the Multan Sultans," Naseer stated. "There was a lot of desire, passion, and I think Gohar was the most disappointed when he couldn’t get the team."
Naseer further clarified that the PSL's auction process allows teams to request a name change, including the option to select a name not among the six initially provided. He added, "At the time, I think Multan was not available, so he chose Sialkot." With the name now accessible, Shah promptly submitted the request, which has been officially approved by the league.
The rebranding signifies a new chapter for the franchise under Shah's leadership. PSL officials confirmed that all necessary procedures for the name change have been completed, and the team will now compete as the Multan Sultans in upcoming league events.
The move has generated significant interest among fans and stakeholders, as the Multan Sultans name carries considerable recognition within the PSL. Further details regarding the team's future plans and management structure are expected to be announced in due course.
