China's top political advisory body wraps key session, sets stage for 15th five-year plan push

BEIJING: The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China’s highest political advisory body, concluded the 15th session of its Standing Committee on Monday in Beijing, laying groundwork for the country’s next five-year development roadmap.

The closing meeting was presided over by Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.

In his address, Wang said that over the past year, the CPPCC National Committee had actively fulfilled its duties, taken on responsibilities and achieved fresh progress across multiple areas of work.

He called on political advisors to centre their proposals in 2026 around the implementation of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), urging them to build consensus, pool wisdom, and ensure a strong start to the new development phase.

Wang also stressed the importance of thorough preparations for the fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, scheduled to open on March 4 in Beijing.

During the meeting, members adopted the draft agenda and schedule for the upcoming annual session, alongside a work report of the Standing Committee and a report detailing how proposals submitted since the third session had been handled.

These documents will be submitted to the fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee for deliberation and review.

The Standing Committee also approved the list of the secretary-general and deputy secretaries-general for the forthcoming session and passed decisions concerning the qualifications of several CPPCC National Committee members.

The session’s conclusion signals Beijing’s early focus on strategic planning and political consultation ahead of the rollout of the 15th Five-Year Plan, a key framework expected to shape China’s economic and social priorities through 2030.
