ISLAMABAD: Islamabad International Airport has transitioned to a fully cashless system, becoming the first airport in Pakistan to adopt an all-digital payment model in a move aimed at modernising services and improving passenger experience.
Under the new arrangement, transactions for airline tickets, car parking, dining facilities, retail outlets, and duty-free shops are now processed exclusively through digital channels. Travellers can make payments via mobile banking apps, digital wallets, QR codes, as well as debit and credit cards.
Airport officials say the initiative is designed to promote greater transparency, operational efficiency, and convenience for passengers. The development comes shortly after the federal government placed the airport on its active privatisation list.
Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager Aftab Gilani said a dedicated mobile application has also been introduced, allowing passengers to monitor and trace lost baggage from anywhere in the world.
He noted that the introduction of digital payments alongside the baggage tracking feature is expected to elevate service standards and strengthen the airport’s international reputation.
Senior Joint Director Commercial Malik Amjad described the transition as a landmark step toward upgrading airport operations and aligning them with global best practices.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Privatisation confirmed that Islamabad International Airport had been added to the government’s active privatisation programme, in line with ongoing efforts involving Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
