Five Police Officers Suspended Over Alleged Custodial Torture in Karachi

Five police officers have been suspended following allegations of custodial torture at the Sharifabad police station in Karachi, according to a statement issued by the Sindh Police’s Central District branch,.

Central Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Imran Khan took action on Sunday after receiving reports of alleged torture of a man in police custody. The statement noted that SSP Imran took serious notice of the incident and directed the immediate suspension of the officers involved.

An initial inquiry was conducted by the Liaquatabad sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) on the orders of the Central SSP. The probe found that four personnel from the Sindh Police’s Shaheen Force and a sentry from the Sharifabad police station were involved in the alleged torture incident.

“All five personnel were immediately suspended and the [case] was closed, while further departmental inquiry is under way,” the Central District police statement read. The statement further added that additional departmental action would be taken after the completion of the ongoing inquiry.

SSP Imran Khan also issued a warning, stating that such conduct would not be tolerated within the police force. He emphasized that strict action would be taken against any personnel found involved in similar incidents in the future.

The police have not released further details regarding the identity of the victim or the specific circumstances surrounding the alleged torture. The departmental inquiry is ongoing, and authorities have stated that further action will be determined based on its findings.
