Aleem Khan outlines Pakistan’s plan to become regional trade hub

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday outlined Pakistan’s ambition to emerge as a key economic hub connecting South and Central Asia at the 88th session of the United Nations Inland Transport Committee.

Addressing international delegates, Aleem Khan said Pakistan is transitioning from a transit route to a center of regional trade and connectivity. “Pakistan is not just a transit country but is becoming a hub of economic connectivity,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening trade links across the region.

The minister highlighted the involvement of Belarus, Russia, and Central Asian states in emerging trade corridors, calling it a new phase of regional cooperation. He noted that Pakistan is facilitating trade to Russia and Central Asia while complying with international laws and UN conventions.

Aleem Khan also cited the National Logistics Cell’s role in expanding trade with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and pointed to strategic infrastructure, including highways from Khunjerab to Pakistan’s ports and a 100-acre terminal at Gwadar Port, which will give landlocked states direct access to the sea.

He described the M-6 Motorway project as a lucrative opportunity for domestic and international investors and underscored progress under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, including modern highways and port expansion projects, as vital for regional connectivity.

The minister added that digital initiatives are underway to enhance transparency in traffic data, while the “Visa on Arrival” facility for 126 countries is expected to boost trade and tourism.
