Fazlur Rehman urges comprehensive healthcare access for Imran Khan in custody

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman has called for full medical facilities to be provided to Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, during his detention at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Addressing the media, the JUI-F leader said that as the head of a major political party, Imran Khan is entitled to all necessary healthcare services while in custody. He stressed that the former prime minister should also be permitted to consult his personal doctors for a thorough medical examination.

Fazlur Rehman said that basic human compassion and cultural values require that detainees receive proper medical care, regardless of political differences. He added that political rivalry should not be allowed to turn into personal hostility, as such attitudes damage society and undermine the purpose of politics, which he described as serving the public good.

His remarks come amid growing concern over Imran Khan’s reported eye condition. Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi stated that the PTI founder had lost up to 85 percent of vision in his right eye.

The claim followed a report submitted to the Supreme Court by Barrister Salman Safdar after meeting Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. The report recommended an immediate eye examination, noting that his vision in the affected eye had deteriorated to around 15 percent.

Speaking in Islamabad, Afridi said that despite treatment, Imran Khan’s eyesight had declined significantly and his condition had become serious. According to the former prime minister, he had normal 6×6 vision in both eyes until October 2025, after which he began experiencing persistent blurred and hazy vision.

Imran Khan has alleged that he repeatedly informed jail authorities about the issue but no timely action was taken, resulting in severe vision loss in his right eye. He said an ophthalmologist from PIMS Hospital, Dr Muhammad Arif, later examined him and diagnosed a blood clot that caused extensive damage. Despite receiving treatment, including an injection, his vision has not substantially improved.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed that a fresh eye examination be conducted before February 16 and ordered the formation of a medical team to assess his condition.
