Former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa admitted to ICU after suffering head injury

ISLAMABAD: Former chief of army staff Qamar Javed Bajwa has been admitted to the intensive care unit after suffering a head injury in a fall at his residence, family sources said on Tuesday.

According to the sources, the retired general slipped in the washroom of his house at around 4:30am. He sustained injuries to his head and was shifted to hospital, where he is currently under treatment in the ICU.

No official medical bulletin had been released at the time of filing this report. Family members said he is receiving care and being monitored by doctors.

Gen (retd) Bajwa served as chief of army staff from 2016 until his retirement on November 29, 2022. During his tenure, he oversaw key military and security developments and represented Pakistan in several high-level engagements abroad.

Before being elevated to the top military post, he held the position of inspector general of training and evaluation at General Headquarters. Over the course of his career, he also served in various command and staff appointments, including at 10 Corps, and participated in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a brigade commander.

He also served as commandant of the Infantry School in Quetta. A member of the Baloch Regiment, Bajwa follows a line of senior officers from the same regiment who have previously led the Pakistan Army, including Yahya Khan, Mirza Aslam Beg and Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
