Pakistan assumes UNSC presidency for July 2025

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025, with Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad pledging to ensure transparency, inclusivity, and responsiveness throughout the country’s tenure. Pakistan’s presidency is part of its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, which began in January 2025. The presidency rotates monthly among the 15 UNSC members, following an alphabetical order.

Ambassador Iftikhar expressed awareness of the complex global challenges, including rising conflicts and humanitarian crises, that the UNSC must address during Pakistan's presidency. He stated that Pakistan would focus on multilateralism, preventive diplomacy, and cooperation with regional organizations to promote international peace and security.

During its presidency, Pakistan is scheduled to host two high-level events on multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes, as well as on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). These topics align with Pakistan’s priorities and reflect its long-standing commitment to UN peacekeeping and peace-building efforts.

Ambassador Iftikhar also met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to brief him on Pakistan’s planned activities for the UNSC’s work in July. He emphasized that Pakistan’s approach would be guided by its consistent advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy. Pakistan, having secured 182 out of 193 votes in its election as a non-permanent member, remains committed to working with all UNSC members for collective and timely action in line with the Council’s responsibilities under the UN Charter.
