Malala, Hillary Clinton premiere new Broadway show about women's voting rights

In a powerful collaboration between two influential women, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousufzai and former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton celebrated the Broadway premiere of their co-produced musical, "Suffs," on Thursday night.

As reported by The New York Times, Broadway has increasingly spotlighted projects led by women and centered on women's stories. Under the leadership of two globally recognized figures, "Suffs" is a fresh musical depicting the suffrage movement dating back to the early 20th century. Joining producers Rachel Sussman and Jill Furman, Malala and Hillary add their weight to the production. Chief theater critic Jesse Green describes "Suffs" as "thoughtful, principled, and somewhat akin to a rally."

"This production serves as a reminder of the hard-fought battle for women's suffrage, a right we should never take for granted," remarked Malala, who attended the show's opening night with her husband, Asser Malik.

For Malala, "Suffs" marks her Broadway debut. The Nobel laureate credits the musical "Matilda" for helping her transition to life in the United Kingdom after surviving an attack by the Taliban in Pakistan due to her advocacy for girls' education. Reflecting on her experience, Malala expressed, "I saw another girl from a different place, and I could connect with her." Her passion for theater blossomed thereafter, with Malala noting, "I've been an avid fan of musicals ever since."

Malala first encountered "Suffs" at the Public Theater in 2022 and was immediately captivated by its narrative. Determined to be part of its journey to Broadway, she emphasized, "This is a story that deserves a wide audience."

In line with Broadway's commitment to female representation, "Suffs" boasts predominantly female talent behind the scenes. Originating a decade ago, the show features singer-songwriter Shaina Taub as its writer of book, music, and lyrics, portraying Alice Paul, one of the movement's leaders. After years of development, "Suffs" premiered at the Public Theatre in 2022, undergoing revisions and adding a new opening number before its Broadway run.

Expressing her excitement, Shaina emphasized the importance of community engagement with the show, urging viewers to register to vote if inspired by its narrative.

Hillary Clinton echoed her enthusiasm for bringing the historical and relevant story of "Suffs" to audiences, emphasizing the emotional resonance and portrayal of the women who fought tirelessly for voting rights.

Given its focus on voting rights and the timing of its release during an election year in the US, "Suffs" has garnered significant interest from audiences. Ranking among the top 10 out of 36 Broadway shows in terms of seats filled, its popularity is expected to soar further in the coming weeks.
