LAHORE: Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam on Wednesday met PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, lauding Islamabad’s “principled positions and continued support” for Iran and describing the bond between the two neighbouring countries as that of “two bodies and one soul.”

“Highly honored to call on Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, president of the PML-N, and Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif,” Moghadam wrote on X following the meeting.

Reiterating Tehran’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties, the envoy said he conveyed his “sincere appreciation for the principled positions and continued support of the government of Pakistan toward Iran in various arenas.”

According to Moghadam, the meeting focused on an exchange of views on the latest regional developments, particularly “in light of recent interventions by the United States and the Israeli regime, including their interventionist positions, threats, and escalatory rhetoric.”

“We also discussed initiatives aimed at further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan,” he added.

The ambassador also acknowledged the “tireless endeavors” of Pakistan’s government—especially Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar—in promoting comprehensive and all-round cooperation between the two nations.

“While stressing Iran’s full readiness to defend itself against any imminent adventurism, I underlined the steadfast determination of the Islamic Republic of Iran to pursue fair, equitable, and constructive negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues through dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international norms,” Moghadam stated.

He further emphasised that Iran and Pakistan were “like two bodies and one soul,” noting that both nations had consistently demonstrated love, commitment and brotherhood throughout history and the test of time.

Quoting Nawaz Sharif, the envoy said the PML-N supremo expressed concern over recent developments and imminent threats, while referring to close monitoring and continuous follow-up of the situation in Iran and the wider region.

“He emphasised the importance of constructive negotiations based on mutual respect and equality, within the framework of international law and good faith, in accordance with the United Nations Charter,” Moghadam said.

According to the ambassador, Nawaz also stressed that dialogue and diplomacy—alongside the protection of national sovereignty and the rejection of any threat or use of force—remained the path toward ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the already volatile region.

Separately, the PML-N also shared details of the meeting on X, stating that bilateral relations, trade, energy cooperation and the regional situation were discussed, with leaders from both sides reiterating their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties.

The party said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz invited Iranian investment in agriculture, information technology and tourism, reaffirming her commitment to advancing economic and social cooperation between the two countries.

According to the statement, the Iranian ambassador expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for their support.

It quoted Nawaz Sharif as saying: “If the door to talks is kept open, even the biggest of issues can be resolved through negotiations. Iran has faced the situation with immense courage.”

Nawaz also extended prayers and good wishes for Iran and its people.

The party further quoted Ambassador Amiri as saying the Muslim world “needed a great leader like Nawaz,” while underlining the importance of his potential role in promoting Pakistan-Iran relations.

The meeting took place amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with a build-up of US forces in the Middle East raising fears of a confrontation.

Against this backdrop, Tehran and Washington are scheduled to hold negotiations in Oman on Friday, with Pakistan also invited to participate.

Reuters quoted a regional official as saying Iran preferred Oman over the initially planned venue of Turkiye, as it would continue previous rounds of talks held in the Gulf country on Tehran’s nuclear programme and avoid any expansion of discussions to issues such as Iran’s ballistic missiles.
