DHAKA: Despite growing threats from Hindu extremists, Bangladesh has taken a firm stance against India and suspended the issuance of visas for Indian citizens.
Bangladesh has expanded the suspension of visa services to three additional major diplomatic missions in India, marking a significant escalation in bilateral tensions.
The move has drawn international attention. The American magazine Foreign Policy described the situation as a political embarrassment for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underlining the growing diplomatic rift between the two neighbours.
In a further demonstration of its protest, the Bangladesh cricket team announced that it would not play its scheduled World Cup matches in India.
Meanwhile, the country has also imposed a ban on the broadcasting of the Indian Premier League (IPL), signalling a comprehensive response that spans both diplomacy and sports.
Analysts say Bangladesh’s multifaceted approach highlights its intent to assert sovereignty while responding decisively to pressures from India, emphasising that the South Asian nation is unwilling to compromise under external threats.
