The provincial government of Punjab has decided to extend the winter vacation for all public and private educational institutions across the province by one week due to the ongoing cold weather.
Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat stated that the decision was made after assessing the severity of the cold snap and its impact on the health of students. According to a public survey, around 87% of respondents supported the extension, while only 13% favored reopening schools on January 12. A total of 154,178 votes were in favor of keeping schools closed until January 19, while 24,829 votes were in support of reopening on January 12.
Hayat instructed the chief executive officers of districts to ensure that the decision is implemented. In an interview, he confirmed that this decision applies to both public and private schools and colleges.
Previously, on January 9, Hayat had denied rumors circulating about an extension in the winter vacation, clarifying that the schools and colleges were set to reopen on January 12 as scheduled. The education minister had dismissed a notification about an extension that had gone viral, calling it “fake.”
The winter vacation in Punjab’s educational institutions began on December 22, 2025, and was initially set to end on January 11, 2026.
