ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and King Abdullah II of Jordan on Saturday underscored their shared commitment to a “zero-tolerance” policy against any displacement of Palestinians from the besieged Gaza Strip, following the devastating Israeli military ‘denocide in the territory.’

The two leaders also discussed avenues to deepen bilateral ties and regional cooperation during King Abdullah II’s two-day state visit to Pakistan.

The bilateral meeting at the Prime Minister’s House focused on humanitarian, strategic, and economic issues. A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said: “On the issue of Palestine, both leaders acknowledged the unanimity of views and principled positions taken by Pakistan and Jordan regarding post-war Gaza; zero-tolerance for any displacement of Palestinians. The two leaders agreed to enhance coordination among the eight Arab-Islamic countries working with the US on the Gaza ceasefire and the Gaza Peace Plan signed in Sharm el Sheikh.”

Pakistan and Jordan were among the eight Muslim countries collaborating with the US administration on measures to halt Israel’s military offensive in Gaza last month. Both nations also joined other key Muslim and Arab states in expressing support for a US resolution to deploy an international stabilization force in Gaza. King Abdullah II lauded Pakistan’s steadfast support for Jordan’s role in regional stability and humanitarian efforts during the Gaza conflict, as well as post-ceasefire reconstruction and relief operations in the territory.

In addition to regional matters, the leaders discussed strategies to further strengthen Pakistan-Jordan bilateral relations. The PMO noted that talks included cooperation in economic, trade, investment, health, science and technology, education, and defence sectors. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing strategic and economic ties and expanding mutually beneficial collaboration at regional and international forums.

The meeting featured a comprehensive exchange of views on regional security and peace initiatives, with Prime Minister Shehbaz briefing the Jordanian monarch on developments in Pakistan’s neighborhood, particularly regarding Afghanistan and India. The statement highlighted King Abdullah II’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s pivotal role in maintaining regional peace and stability.

As part of the visit, both leaders witnessed the exchange of memorandums of understanding in media, culture, and education. PM Shehbaz Sharif hosted a banquet in honor of the king and his delegation, reflecting the warmth and depth of Pakistan-Jordan relations. Senior officials accompanying the prime minister included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Climate Change Minister Dr. Musaddiq Malik, and other top government officials.

The king was welcomed with a guard of honor upon his arrival at the Prime Minister’s House. He had earlier been warmly received at Nur Khan Airbase by PM Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari. President Zardari remarked that the visit would give Pakistan-Jordan relations a “new strategic dimension,” rooted in historical brotherhood, mutual trust, and shared values.

State broadcaster PTV News described the visit as a testament to “longstanding fraternal relations” and said it would further strengthen political, economic, and cultural ties. A formation of Pakistan Air Force JF-17 Thunder aircraft escorted the royal flight as it entered Pakistani airspace, underscoring the visit’s significance.

King Abdullah II’s last visit to Pakistan was at the invitation of former President Mamnoon Hussain, during which two MoUs were signed: one on civil protection and defence cooperation and another on the housing sector. Last month, the king also praised the Pakistani military’s role in regional peace and security during a meeting with COAS Field Marshal Asim Munir in Jordan, with Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II present.

The visit reinforces Pakistan and Jordan’s shared commitment to regional stability, humanitarian support for Gaza, and the deepening of bilateral cooperation across strategic, economic, and cultural spheres.
