Deepak Perwani reflects on joint family upbringing

Deepak Perwani, a well-known Pakistani fashion designer and actor from the Hindu community, has built an impressive career in both fashion and television. Known for his work with MD Productions, he has appeared in multiple dramas including Aas Paas, Kadurat, Yunhi, Qarz-e-Jaan and is currently receiving praise for his performance in Jamaa Taqseem.
Speaking on a Youtube show, Perwani shared memories of his childhood in a joint family and opened up about filming scenes in a mosque for an upcoming project.
Recalling his early years, he said he grew up in a joint family in Mirpur Khas before moving to Karachi. He described a household where his grandmother cooked everything from scratch and the family lived closely together. He added that after inheritance was divided, the family separated, and only then did his mother tell him that his grandmother had ADHD and would make sure the entire house was cleaned regularly. He said the time spent in the joint family system remained a cherished part of his childhood.
Perwani also spoke about feeling initial hesitation when shooting scenes inside a mosque. He said there were moments during filming when he felt uncomfortable because he had never performed such scenes before, especially those involving Islamic terminology, including tajweed. Despite this, he took on the challenge, saying that expanding one’s range is part of being an actor and that he wanted to perform the role with full dedication. He added that he could not reveal details since the scenes have not aired yet, but agreed to do them because it was his responsibility as a performer.
