Pakistan requests 10,000 PhD scholarships from China for youth development

Pakistan has proposed that China grant 10,000 PhD scholarships to Pakistani students at the top 25 universities in China. The initiative is aimed at addressing the country’s significant youth unemployment and supporting the economic modernization under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal shared that the proposal was discussed with Chinese officials during the most recent Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting. He confirmed that China showed interest and asked for further details.

The scholarships would focus on emerging technologies and fields such as artificial intelligence, engineering, and advanced sciences over the next decade. Iqbal emphasized that this plan would help develop human capital, strengthening the “softer” aspects of CPEC by fostering a knowledge-driven economy.

Additionally, a separate proposal outlines plans for vocational training programs, youth innovation centers, and internships in Chinese companies. These initiatives are designed to provide Pakistan’s youth with valuable skills in technology, industry, and sustainable growth.

The World Bank’s recent report highlighted that 37% of Pakistan’s youth aged 15-24 are neither employed nor enrolled in education or training, with higher rates among women and the urban poor. The report warned that persistent skill gaps and poor education quality could lead to further social and economic inequality.

Pakistan and China have also agreed to enhance cooperation in ICT, cybersecurity, spectrum management, and human resource development, alongside promoting a positive image of CPEC projects. To improve project development capacity, Pakistan has proposed hiring foreign consultants, with a Rs5.4 billion plan under review by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP). The consultancy would help ensure that policies and projects meet international standards.
