Ex-PM Abbasi stable after heart treatment

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s condition has improved after a cardiac issue on Saturday, his Awaam Pakistan party said in a statement on Sunday.

Party spokesperson Dr Zafar Mirza said Abbasi had experienced pain in his shoulder early on Saturday and was “immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors diagnosed a cardiac issue during examination.”

“The doctors provided timely treatment, after which his health has improved significantly, and he is now resting at the hospital,” Dr Mirza said, adding that the party prayed for his speedy recovery and requested the media to respect his privacy.

Awaam Pakistan co-founder and former finance minister Miftah Ismail said on X that Abbasi’s condition “continues to improve” and that he is “resting comfortably.” He thanked well-wishers for their concern and prayers for Abbasi’s recovery.

Several journalists, including anchorperson Nadia Mirza and reporter Asad Toor, also expressed their wishes for the former premier’s swift recovery on social media.

Abbasi and Ismail, who both left the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), launched Awaam Pakistan in July 2024 after developing the idea for more than a year.

Abbasi previously tested positive for the coronavirus in June 2020. While in prison in 2019 in connection with an accountability case, he had also faced several health concerns, including gallbladder pain, hernia issues, and hypertension.
