US President Donald Trump on Monday dismissed the idea of running for vice president in the 2028 election, rejecting suggestions that it could allow him to serve another term. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I’d be allowed to do that, but I wouldn’t. I think it’s too cute. People wouldn’t like that. It wouldn’t be right.”
His comments followed speculation fuelled by “Trump 2028” hats and previous remarks implying he might explore unconventional paths to extend his presidency. The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution prohibits any individual from being elected president more than twice.
Some of Trump’s supporters have argued he could bypass this restriction by running as vice president and later assuming the presidency if his running mate resigned. Legal experts have questioned whether such a scenario would be constitutional.
Referring to the prospect of a third term, Trump said, “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.” When asked whether he was ruling out the possibility entirely, he replied, “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me.”
Trump also praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling them “great people” and suggesting they could lead the country in the future. “If they ever formed a group, it’d be unstoppable,” he added.
