80pc of Karachi buildings lack fire safety systems, moot told

KARACHI: Nearly 80 percent of buildings in Karachi lack basic fire safety systems, officials revealed ahead of a major fire safety conference, warning that the city faces a worsening crisis as fire incidents continue to rise.

Rehan Hanif, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), expressed serious concern over the surge in fires across factories, commercial centers, and residential buildings. He called for urgent collaboration among civic authorities, business groups, government departments, and property owners to prevent further loss of life and property.

During a meeting with the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH), Hanif urged a comprehensive review of existing safety measures, stricter enforcement of regulations, and widespread awareness campaigns. He confirmed that the KCCI would take part in the upcoming Fire Safety and Security Conference.

NFEH President Muhammad Naeem Qureshi said the number of fire incidents had already surpassed last year’s total, with over 2,900 cases recorded by November 2024 compared to 2,228 in 2023. The number is expected to exceed 3,000 by the end of the year. He blamed the lack of alarms, sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits in most buildings as a key cause of the crisis.

Dr Imran Taj, President of the Fire Protection Industry of Pakistan, said nearly 90 percent of fires in industrial and commercial premises stemmed from negligence and poor planning.

The NFEH will host its 15th annual Fire Safety and Security Conference and Awards on November 4 to explore solutions and recognize organizations with exemplary safety practices.
