LAHORE: As smog intensifies across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, discussions are heating up regarding the potential closure of schools and an early start to winter vacations this year.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that air pollution has worsened due to extended dry weather, with conditions expected to worsen in the coming days.
In November last year, the Punjab government closed all schools for a week due to hazardous air quality, later extending the break as smog levels continued to rise. While no official decision has been made yet, the provincial government and Education Department are monitoring the situation closely.
Authorities have suggested that if pollution persists, they may consider suspending classes for primary-level students to safeguard their health. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings that air quality across eastern Punjab is likely to decline even further in the coming days.
Environmental experts are advising the public to take precautions, as the toxic air could lead to respiratory issues, including cough, flu, and eye irritation, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with preexisting health conditions.
