PPP governors call alliance with PML-N a ‘political necessity’

PESHAWAR: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders on Friday described their alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as a matter of political necessity rather than affection, acknowledging strains within the coalition over unmet commitments.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Peshawar, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said the PPP’s partnership with the PML-N was “not born of love, but of compulsion.”

Governor Haider said that while relations between the two parties remained functional, several clauses of their written power-sharing agreement had been ignored by the PML-N. “Many of our concerns were addressed,” he said, “but some important promises were not fulfilled. The Prime Minister has assured us these issues will be resolved, but the future of this alliance cannot be predicted.”

He admitted that workers of both parties were yet to fully accept each other, though the PPP was working to revive its organisation in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Haider urged the KP government to improve coordination with the federation, warning that political confrontation would hurt governance. Commenting on the jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder, he said, “The chief minister should be allowed to meet him — such a meeting would bring no calamity.”

Governor Kundi echoed his colleague, saying the PPP remained committed to democracy despite political challenges. “Our cooperation with the PML-N is based on necessity, not affection,” he said, stressing that dialogue, not disruption, was the party’s guiding principle.
