MIRPUR: Preparations have been finalised across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to celebrate the 78th founding anniversary of the AJK government on Friday, with events set to highlight the region’s historic struggle for self-determination and its commitment to development and stability.
Commemorative ceremonies will be held in all ten districts of AJK under the aegis of the National Events Organising Committee. Officials said the day would begin with special prayers for the freedom of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), as well as for the progress and prosperity of the liberated territory.
In Mirpur, the main flag-hoisting ceremony will take place at the Municipal Corporation lawn at 9 a.m., attended by senior government officials, elected representatives, and civil society members. Public and private organisations will also hold seminars, rallies, and symposiums to mark the occasion.
Speakers at the events are expected to pay tribute to the founding fathers of the AJK government, established on October 24, 1947, following the liberation of parts of the region from the Dogra regime. They will reaffirm solidarity with the people of IIOJK and renew the pledge to continue advocating for their right to self-determination as enshrined in United Nations resolutions.
This year’s observance comes amid continuing tensions in the region following India’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke Articles 370 and 35-A of its constitution, which had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. AJK officials described the move as a violation of international law and UN commitments on the Kashmir dispute.
According to organisers, the Founding Day celebrations aim to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for liberation while reiterating AJK’s role as the “base camp” of the ongoing freedom movement.
