Lift crashes at private hospital in Karachi

KARACHI: Five people were injured on Thursday when an elevator collapsed at a private hospital in Karachi’s Nazimabad area.

Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, transporting the injured, including women, to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

This incident adds to a series of elevator-related accidents in Karachi. On March 24, 2025, a similar event occurred when a factory lift near Shafiq Mor in New Karachi plunged after its cable snapped due to overloading, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Younus, a resident of Mirpur. His body was later taken to a nearby hospital by rescue officials.

Earlier, on February 25, 2025, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad narrowly avoided injury when an elevator at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital malfunctioned. The lift, carrying over 15 people during the inauguration of the Hemophilia Treatment Center, fell from the fourth floor and became stuck near the first floor for several minutes.

Authorities have raised concerns over the poor maintenance and overloading of elevators in both public and private buildings across the city.
