Pakistan cracks down on fake news creators with arrests and bans

ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has launched an extensive crackdown on fake news and disinformation networks following recent protests by a religious group. Authorities have identified several networks responsible for spreading false information and compiled a list of key individuals involved.

Under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), cases will be filed against those involved, with the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) taking immediate steps to arrest suspects. A dedicated Deep Fake Lab has been established to analyze fabricated videos and audio clips circulating online. Additionally, social media platforms have been issued notices to remove fake content within 24 hours, with repeated violations resulting in permanent account suspensions.

The NCCIA has warned citizens against sharing unverified content, urging a zero-tolerance approach towards false or harmful content targeting state institutions. Investigations are also underway to trace international networks spreading propaganda, with discussions about issuing Red Notices and seeking international cooperation to penalize offenders.

Television channels, vloggers, and social media influencers have been instructed to double-check news content before publication, while operations against misleading hashtags and troll cells have been initiated. Authorities are also closely monitoring financial transactions linked to suspicious online activities, with enhanced penalties for violators.

Provincial focal persons have been appointed to ensure quick responses and counter-messaging efforts. The public has been urged to report fake news through the helpline 1919, with assurances that the identities of whistleblowers will be kept confidential.
