KARACHI: Fishermen along Sindh’s coast have suspended deep-sea operations following an advisory from the Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) Karachi, which cautioned against venturing into open waters until October 5 amid rough conditions triggered by Severe Cyclone Shakti in the northeast Arabian Sea.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Shakti was located about 700 kilometres southwest of Karachi on Sunday evening. While the storm currently poses no direct threat to Pakistan’s coastal belt, authorities have warned of rough to very rough seas and strong winds near the Sindh coast.
Sustained winds around the cyclone’s centre were reported at 100–110 km/h, with gusts up to 125 km/h, the PMD said, adding that intensity may increase over the next 12 hours. Near the Sindh-Makran coast, winds are expected to range between 40–50 km/h, with gusts reaching 55 km/h.
Light rain is likely in Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, and Kech, while sea conditions are forecast to remain high to very high from midnight on October 5 to October 7.
The CWC Karachi said it continues to monitor the system closely and will issue updated advisories as needed.
