LAHORE: The Punjab government has launched a large-scale crackdown aimed at reducing vehicular pollution by targeting vehicles that emit excessive smoke. This move comes in response to the rising levels of smog across the province, with authorities intensifying their efforts to address the environmental concerns.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police Punjab, Muhammad Waqas Nazir, has directed all Chief Traffic Officers (CTOs) and District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to implement strict measures. He emphasized that unfit vehicles must be stopped from entering highways and stated that there would be no leniency for owners of such vehicles.
As part of the initiative, traffic police have been instructed to thoroughly check the route permits and fitness certificates of vehicles. Additionally, action will be taken against trucks and carriers transporting mud or sand without proper tarpaulin covers, as these uncovered loads contribute significantly to dust pollution.
DIG Nazir revealed that the number of vehicles contributing to smog has increased by 240 percent this year, highlighting the urgency of the crackdown. He stressed that reducing vehicular emissions is a crucial step in mitigating environmental hazards and safeguarding public health.
