JAPAN: Japanese police have arrested a 75-year-old woman who allegedly admitted to keeping her daughter’s body in a freezer for two decades.
Authorities discovered the remains of an adult woman inside a deep freezer at the residence of Keiko Mori, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, on Tuesday. A police spokesperson revealed that Mori identified the body as her daughter, Makiko, who would have been 49 or 50 years old if still alive.
The body was in an advanced state of decay, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the cause of death. According to police, Mori voluntarily came forward with a relative on Tuesday, confessing to storing the body due to the foul odor filling the house.
When officers visited the property, they found the body lying face-down in the freezer, wearing only a T-shirt and underwear. Mori was arrested on suspicion of abandoning a corpse. She explained that the smell had become overwhelming, prompting her to purchase the freezer and place her daughter’s remains inside.
Mori, who had several children, had been living alone following the recent death of her husband earlier this month. Authorities did not reveal further details about her other children or their involvement in the investigation.
