Islamabad-Rawalpindi rail project to introduce eco-friendly electric trains

ISLAMABAD: The upcoming Islamabad-Rawalpindi rail service is set to become the first eco-friendly commuter link between the twin cities, with plans to operate as an electric vehicle (EV) train. This groundbreaking initiative was discussed in a key meeting held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhwa.

The meeting confirmed that the CDA and Pakistan Railways will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the modern train service, aimed at providing better transportation options between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The project will feature cutting-edge train technology with an emphasis on eco-friendly solutions, as the train will be electric-powered to minimize its carbon footprint.

Randhwa highlighted the extensive planning that has gone into the project, including a review of the train’s layout and business model, as well as the results of a ridership survey. He also reassured that the project would meet all regulations necessary to incorporate carbon credits, further cementing its sustainability goals.

In addition to the train service, feeder buses will be introduced, including electric buses to connect to the Margalla Railway Station, ensuring smooth integration of the service across the cities. The project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, providing a comfortable, affordable, and eco-friendly travel option for commuters.

Randhwa added that once completed, the project will not only modernize the transportation network but also contribute to the overall development of Islamabad and its neighboring areas. The service will adhere to international standards and best practices, ensuring high-quality service for passengers.
