KARACHI: The flood threat in Sindh has diminished as the water levels in the Indus River recede, easing concerns about a potential super flood. The Provincial Rain and Flood Emergency Monitoring Cell reported on Monday that the river’s flow across Sindh is declining, as monsoon rains end and upstream water levels fall.
Recent data shows the inflow at Guddu Barrage recorded 260,309 cusecs, with an outflow of 231,545 cusecs. At Sukkur Barrage, the inflow was 261,554 cusecs and the outflow 206,434 cusecs. Kotri Barrage recorded an inflow of 364,041 cusecs, with an outflow of 339,486 cusecs.
While Kotri remains at a medium flood level, Guddu and Sukkur continue to experience low-level flooding. Officials have confirmed that the risk of a super flood in Sindh has now been averted due to the receding flow from Punjab.
As a precaution, the Sindh government had already relocated thousands of people from vulnerable riverine areas to safer locations.
Karachi weather turns pleasant
A drizzle and light showers in various parts of Karachi on Monday morning brought a refreshing change in the weather. Areas such as Old City, Saddar, Clifton, and PECHS experienced light rain, with Saddar, M.A. Jinnah Road, and Keamari remaining mostly cloudy.
The light rain, caused by low-level clouds moving in from the sea, is expected to continue, with humidity levels rising to 77 percent. Karachi’s weather is predicted to remain cloudy until September 25.
While Monday and Tuesday will see hot and dry weather in most parts of Sindh, the coastal belt may experience partly cloudy skies.
On Monday, Karachi’s temperature reached a high of 32°C. The heat is expected to intensify by the end of the month as temperatures rise further.
Punjab flood relief efforts
In flood-affected areas of Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited Bahawalnagar to assess ongoing relief operations. She visited a flood relief camp at the Technical College in Bahawalnagar and checked on the facilities available for the displaced individuals. The Chief Minister also visited a temporary school set up for the children affected by the floods, where she interacted with the students.
The District Administration of Bahawalnagar provided a detailed briefing to the Chief Minister about the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the region.
