UAE defeat Oman to register first Asia Cup win

United Arab Emirates secured their first victory of the Asia Cup with a 42-run triumph over Oman in Abu Dhabi on Monday. Captain Muhammad Waseem struck 69 and Alishan Sharafu made 51, combining for an 88-run opening stand that set up UAE’s total of 172 for five.

The bowlers then completed the job by dismissing Oman for 130 in 18.4 overs. Junaid Siddique led the attack with four wickets for 23, while Haider Ali and Muhammad Jawadullah picked up two each.

Waseem and Sharafu initially played watchfully before accelerating with boundaries to take the game away from the opposition. Sharafu fell after his half-century, while Waseem carried on before being run out in the last over.

Oman never looked in control of the chase, slipping to 50 for five. Captain Jatinder Singh was their top scorer with 20 as they slumped to a second consecutive defeat.

UAE now face Pakistan on Wednesday in a decisive fixture for a place in the Super Four. Defending champions India lead Group A with two wins from two games and are close to sealing their spot in the next stage.
