Khyber homes set ablaze after residents film women for TikTok

KHYBER: Tribal elders in Tirah Valley, Khyber district, ordered the burning of four houses after their occupants filmed local women for TikTok videos and uploaded them on social media, officials confirmed on Monday.

The extreme punishment has drawn mixed reactions from the community, with some residents supporting the decision while others condemned it as inhuman. TikTok, one of the most popular social media apps in Pakistan, continues to face opposition in conservative and tribal areas where recording or sharing videos of women is widely discouraged.

The incident comes amid renewed political pressure against the platform. On Sunday, Opposition MPA Farrukh Javed Moon submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly demanding a nationwide ban on TikTok, citing moral and social concerns.

According to the resolution, TikTok’s “mafia” is allegedly promoting obscenity and vulgarity through live chats, encouraging youth — especially children — to engage in indecent conversations and acts for cheap fame and money. The resolution argued that such practices are incompatible with an Islamic society and threaten the moral fabric of the nation.

It called on the federal government to urgently impose a ban on TikTok and its live chat features to protect the younger generation from “moral destruction.”
