LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz unveiled a special flood relief package on Wednesday, offering compensation and infrastructure plans to aid those affected by recent flooding. Speaking at a relief camp in Jalalpur Pirwala City, she announced that the heirs of those who lost their lives in the floods would receive Rs1 million each. Homeowners who lost their property entirely would also be compensated with Rs1 million, while those with partial damage would receive Rs500,000.
In a move to support livestock owners, Maryam stated that families who lost large animals would be given Rs500,000, and those who lost small animals would receive Rs50,000. “I am Nawaz Sharif’s daughter, and I intend to uphold every promise made,” she affirmed, emphasizing that no affected individual would be left without support.
Maryam also outlined several development projects, including the construction of a permanent embankment in Jalalpur Pirwala and the launching of the Gillani Expressway for Uch Sharif. She assured flood victims that they were being treated as guests and that there was no rush to return them home until it was safe. “We are working tirelessly to safeguard every family,” she said, vowing continued support.
To streamline recovery efforts, the Chief Minister formed a 14-member high-level committee tasked with developing a comprehensive flood relief and rehabilitation strategy. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb will lead the committee, which includes key provincial figures, including ministers for health, irrigation, agriculture, and other essential services. The committee will assess damages, formulate a funding plan, and create digital maps of flood zones and river paths.
The committee has been given a week to present its strategy, aimed at providing immediate and long-term recovery support to flood-affected communities.
