LAHORE: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that Punjab is facing severe flooding after being hit by the seventh monsoon wave, with river levels dangerously high and major dams approaching full capacity. The authority issued an emergency alert, warning of potential further devastation in the coming weeks.
Areas in Kasur, Bahawalnagar, and Narowal have been submerged by floodwaters, breaching embankments and destroying crops, forcing large-scale evacuations. Rescue teams are using boats to rescue stranded residents, while emergency camps provide food, tents, and blankets. Authorities have also warned that water releases from India’s Harike Headworks could worsen flooding downstream.
The death toll in Punjab has reached 164, with at least 70 children among the victims. This monsoon season is being described as one of the deadliest in years. The NDMA has issued a stark warning, preparing for what could be the most severe flooding the province has experienced in years.
Meanwhile, scattered showers have been reported across Lahore, and the Met Office has cautioned that heavy rains may lead to flash floods in parts of Pothohar, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Koh-e-Suleman.
