New year of Islamic calendar begins as Muharram crescent sighted

ISLAMABAD: The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee on Thursday announced that the Muharram moon has been sighted, and hence the first of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year, will fall on June 27, on Friday (tomorrow), in the country.

Accordingly, Youm-e-Ashura—the 10th of Muharram—will be observed on July 6 (Sunday).

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, “In pursuance of the decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, in its meeting held today at Quetta, the Federal Government in the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Islamabad hereby announces that the moon of Muharramul Haram 1447 AH has been sighted.”

“Therefore, the 1st Muharramul Haram 1447 AH, shall commence on Friday, June 27 2025,” it added.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered as the month of mourning worldwide to commemorate the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, where, amongst many, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), Imam Husain, and other family members were martyred or subjected to humiliation.

Interior Minister reviews security plan for Muharram

Earlier on Thursday, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi presided over a special meeting to review security arrangements during Muharram and decided to take stern action against those spreading hatred on social media.

The participants of the meeting reviewed the security plan during Muharram in all four provinces and Azad Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Islamabad.

It was decided during the meeting that some recommendations will be forwarded to the Pakistan Electronic and Regulatory Authority (PENRA) in this regard.

It was also decided to take effective measures to ensure the law and order situation is under control during Muharram.

The meeting decided that a decision about the suspension of internet and mobile services will be taken after consultation with the provinces.

Naqvi vowed to take all decisions in coordination with all relevant organizations, reaffirming that the center will extend all-out support to all the provinces, including Azad Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Islamabad, to maintain the law and order situation.

The Interior Minister said that no one will be allowed to take the law into their hands.

He said that implementation of SOPs must be ensured during Muharram, especially during majalis and processions.

Naqvi said that the use of the latest technology should be ensured during the monitoring of Muharram processions and majalis.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhary, the federal secretary of interior, the acting chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the DIG of Islamabad, and heads of other law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) took part in the meeting.

Inspectors-General of Police (IGPs) and secretaries from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and Islamabad participated in the meeting.

A comprehensive briefing was also given to the Interior Minister.

KP announces public holiday to commemorate martyrdom day of Hazrat Umar (RA)

Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharramul Haram (Friday) to commemorate the martyrdom day of Hazrat Umar (RA), the second Caliph.

This holiday applies to all government offices, educational institutions, and businesses across the province.

According to an official notification issued by the provincial authorities, the holiday will be observed on 1st Muharram 1447 Hijri, subject to the sighting of the new moon, as confirmed by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
