Police thwart attempt to marry off 13-year-old girl in Karachi

KARACHI: A planned child marriage in Hijrat Colony was successfully stopped on Friday following a joint operation by local police and the Women and Child Protection Cell.

The operation was launched after the Women and Child Protection Cell received credible information about the impending marriage. District South SSP Mehtor Ali was alerted, and the Civil Lines police quickly intervened, finding preparations underway for the marriage of the 13-year-old girl.

Police asked the family to produce official documentation to verify the girl’s age, which confirmed she was 13 years old. Based on the minor’s statement and additional evidence, police arrested her parents and several others involved in organizing the marriage.

A case has been registered at the Civil Lines police station under the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2013, and Section 511 of the Pakistan Penal Code for attempting to commit an offence.
