Washington: United health group, one of the largest health insurers in the United States, is reportedly under criminal investigation by the us justice department for possible medicare fraud, according to the wall street journal. the probe focuses on the company’s medicare advantage program, where private insurers manage government health benefits for seniors.

This development comes shortly after united health's CEO unexpectedly announced his resignation. it also follows the December killing of Brian Thompson, head of United health's insurance division, a case that intensified public scrutiny of the american commercial healthcare system.

United health has stated that it has not been officially notified of any investigation by the justice department and criticised the report as “deeply irresponsible.” the company declined further comment on the matter.
