Govt declares May 16 as Day of Gratitude to honour military victory

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially declared May 16, 2025, as a ‘Day of Gratitude’ to honour the armed forces and people of Pakistan for their “historic victory” in Operation Bunyan un Marsoos, aimed at defending the nation’s sovereignty against Indian aggression.

The day-long national commemoration will be marked by state-led ceremonies across the country, beginning with Quran recitations and special prayers in mosques. A 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in all provincial capitals will signal the start of the day.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will preside over the central ceremony at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, joined by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and heads of the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force.

According to official sources, the government aims to honour the collective resolve of the armed forces and citizens during a moment described as a defining chapter in the country’s defense narrative.

Guard-changing ceremonies will take place at the mausoleums of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi and Allama Iqbal in Lahore, followed by flag-hoisting ceremonies in Islamabad and provincial capitals.

Floral wreaths will be laid at memorials dedicated to the martyrs of the operation, while tributes will be paid to the families of fallen soldiers through official visits and remembrance gatherings.

Prominent scholars, civil society representatives, public officials, and citizens are expected to participate in various commemorative events, underscoring national unity and resilience in the face of external threats.

Officials described the ‘Day of Gratitude’ as a symbolic reaffirmation of Pakistan’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and to honour those who sacrificed for the nation.
