PPP’s Senate victory in Sindh signals continued political dominance in province

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Syed Waqar Mehdi on Tuesday won the by-election for the vacant general seat in the Senate from Sindh, reinforcing PPP’s political foothold in the province.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Mehdi secured a convincing 111 votes, while his main rival, Nighat Mirza of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), received 36 votes. Two votes were rejected due to incorrect marking, confirmed Returning Officer Ejaz Anwar Chauhan, who also serves as the Provincial Election Commissioner for Sindh.

The by-election was held in the Sindh Assembly from 9:00am to 4:00pm without any break, with a total of 149 votes cast during the session.

The Senate seat had fallen vacant following the death of PPP Senator Taj Haider, a veteran politician and longtime member of the upper house.

With this win, Waqar Mehdi will serve as senator until March 2027, completing the remainder of the term originally held by Taj Haider.

The victory was largely expected due to PPP’s dominant position in the Sindh Assembly and marks another consolidation of the party’s legislative strength at the federal level.
