Not all is lost

Sanctions were imposed on Pakistan after it opted to go ahead with nuclear testing back in 1998. We survived those sanctions. Afghanistan is surviving despite a number of hardships. Iran is standing on its feet after all those years of crushing sanctions. Things can work out for those who really value independence.
