Bilawal calls for policy review to curb terrorism

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said Pakistan needed to review its internal security policies to curb the rising menace of militancy.

In recent months, Pakistan has experienced a significant increase in violence and dozens of security personnel have been killed in attacks on army outposts along the border with Afghanistan.

Many attacks have been claimed by Afghanised-based Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), who analysts say have been emboldened by the Afghan Taliban seizing power last August.

At a press briefing in Islamabad, Zardari said that following the latest wave of attacks, people in the northwest took to the streets against the resurgence of terrorism.

He said it is the responsibility of the government to ensure peace, rule of law and the state’s writ.

“Perhaps it is time for an in-camera internal review on decisions regarding terrorism and internal security,” he said.

Zardari said there has been a significant increase in terrorist attacks after regional changes in the past year or so in Pakistan.

Talking about cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan, he said Islamabad wants Kabul to show progress in safeguarding its neighbours from terrorism.
