The federal government has decided to revoke president’s power to remove National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman by introducing an amendment in the relevant ordinance, a news outlet reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, the government will amend the National Accountability (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, which had granted president the power to remove NAB chairman.
On Monday, President Dr Arif Alvi had signed the National Accountability (Third Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 and brought further changes to the National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021.
The National Accountability (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 had allowed incumbent NAB chief Justice (R) Javed Iqbal to continue in office until his successor is appointed. It had also enabled the president to reappoint the incumbent chairman or extend their tenure.
The law ministry had issued the ordinance following the approval from President Alvi.
