Pakistan ‘moving forward’ as active Covid-19 cases fall to three-month low

ISLAMABAD: The country was “moving forward” in its fight against the pandemic, the Foreign Office said as active coronavirus cases were recorded below 50,000 for the first time in more than two months.

The update was released by National Command and Operation Centre which suggested that the contagion rate remained well below 4 percent for a fourth consecutive day.

“Due to effective policies & timely interventions the #COVID19 positivity ratio in [Pakistan] drops to 3.1%, lowest since current wave of the pandemic started.” Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said in a tweet.

“Total active cases in the country are down to 47764. Heartening to see #PakistanMovingForward in its fight against the pandemic,” he added.

The total caseload of active cases reached 47,764 after 1,629 more people tested positive for the disease, the data showed.

Meanwhile, 2,726 patients recovered from the disease during the last 24 hours, the NCOC said in its daily update.

The NCOC said that 76 patients, 74 of them in hospitals, died of the pandemic during the past 24 hours, raising the nationwide toll to 21,265.

Of the active cases, 3,734 patients were under treatment at various dedicated healthcare facilities. 3,452 patients were in critical care, including 424 on ventilators.

The body announced that the national positivity rate during the last 24 hours was 3.10 percent.

The disease first emerged in the country in February last year. Since then the portal has recorded 932,140 coronavirus cases. So far, 863,111 patients had fully recovered from the viral disease, which showed a promising 92.6 percent recovery rate.

Punjab remains the worst affected province in terms of both the number of cases and the number of fatalities. The provincial caseload of the disease reached 342,192, including 10,290 deaths.

Punjab is followed by Sindh with 323,072 cases and 5,116 fatalities.

A total of 13,523,599 tests had been conducted so far, while 639 hospitals are equipped with Covid-19 facilities countrywide.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan told media that the authorities have administered over 8.2 million Covid-19 vaccine doses across the country with over 2.3 million people fully vaccinated.
