ISLAMABAD: Former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Imran Khan, has highlighted the diplomatic challenges marring the sport under the current diplomatic climate.
His remarks come as the rulers of the country are busy tracing different diplomatic solutions, especially amidst the ongoing high-level visit to Saudi Arabia, at a time Pakistan’s foreign policy is traversing a major reshuffle.
Speaking to a British channel, Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to the ODI World Cup triumph in Pakistan, and is considered one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the game, said that a cricket series between India and Pakistan might not be possible because of the ‘ruling elite’.
“You can see the kind of regressive and divisive foreign policy that the country has undertaken. This is largely due to the establishment’s interference. If I were the prime minister of Pakistan, I would never allow that, and instead promote healthier relations between Pakistan and India,” Khan told the British channel.
Khan told the channel how he first visited India in 1979, then in 1987. “I know Indians better than anyone. I know the Brits better than anyone. Turks, Germans, Japanese – I even know you better than anyone,” Khan told the British TV host.
“However, unfortunately, I don’t know Pakistan’s rulers – and I definitely don’t know what they are thinking when they devise such destructive policies.”
