–Accountability watchdog issues performance report, says rate of conviction at 70pc
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif along with relevant documents on July 5 in a case pertaining to owning assets beyond known sources of income.
According to media reports, Nusrat Shehbaz, first wife of Shehbaz Sharif, owned assets worth Rs225.6 million while his second wife, Tehmina Durrani owned assets worth Rs5.7 million in Pakistan.
However, Tehmina Durrani owned eight valuable properties in the Defence area, which were gifted to her by Shehbaz Sharif. Tehmina Durrani also owned a four kanal plot and one acre valuable agricultural land in Gwadar.
Shehbaz is also facing NAB cases pertaining to money laundering, Ramzan Sugar Mills and Ashiana Housing Scheme.
In the Ashiana housing scam, Shehbaz is accused of ordering the cancellation of a contract given to successful bidder Chaudhry Latif and Sons for the low-cost housing scheme, which led to the award of the contract to Lahore Casa Developers, a proxy group of Paragon City Private Limited, resulting in a loss of Rs193 million.
In the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption case, Shehbaz and his son Hamza Shahbaz are accused of “fraudulently and dishonestly” causing Rs213 million loss to the national exchequer.
Meanwhile, NAB has issued report, according to which it has arrested at least 4000 people since its inception.
It said the success rate of proving the crimes remained at 70 per cent.
As per the report, NAB received 426,000 complaints of corruption and action was taken on 14,000 applications.
The report added that an inquiry was launched over 8000 applications while 4200 cases were formally investigated.
It said bureau filed 3500 references of corruption in the courts and 1231 references pertaining to Rs900billion of corruption money are in courts.
