Afghan president meets US special envoy on peace process

KABUL: Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday met with visiting United States (US) Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, discussing the latest efforts for a political solution to the conflict in the country, the Presidential Palace said.

During the meeting, Khalilzad briefed the Afghan president on his tours to the countries in the region, focusing on peace and reconciliation of Afghanistan, the palace said in a statement.

President Ghani said at the meeting that joint peace efforts would help Afghans to achieve a lasting peace and put an end to the long war and crisis, according to the statement.

The meeting was attended by government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, the brief statement said.

The US diplomat, leading a delegation, arrived in Afghanistan earlier on Thursday after visiting Pakistan.

Khalilzad held three-day talks with the Taliban political representatives in Qatar last month and more discussions are expected during his current trip to Qatar.
