#WorldEnvironmentDay: Saving the world one step at a time

June 5 marks the World Environment Day and it is the United Nation’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

The World Environment Day is a day for people to make their contribution to saving the Earth. It could be anything from planting a tree to running a campaign, it is the thought and true intentions of taking care of the planet that count. A good deed for the day.

Every year, the World Environment Day follows a theme to highlight any one of the major environmental concerns and is hosted by a different country every year.

The host country is where the official celebrations take place. The focus on the host country helps to highlight the environmental challenges it faces and supports the effort to address them.

This year, the theme for the Environment Day was beating ‘Plastic Pollution’ and India was the official host.

In a message, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged all people to reject single-use plastic items, and warned that growing levels of plastic waste were becoming unmanageable, saying “every year, more than eight million tons end up in the oceans.” Gathered here, a look at some of this plastic waste from the past year, accumulating in waterways, forests, and beaches across the globe, and some of the efforts to clean and recycle the mountains of material.

Plastic, which is rampantly polluting our water bodies, harming marine life and posing a threat to human health, has been one of the major concerns of environmental bodies this year. Nearly one-third of it is not disposed off properly and ends up clogging drains and choking the environment.

Plastic can persist in the environment for nearly a thousand years before it fully disintegrates and keeping this in mind, many organisations and governments are looking for alternatives to tackle this problem.

With plastic making up 10% of the total waste generated, half of it used is disposable or single-use. This presents a major problem as it is non-renewable and its manufacture and destruction exposes individuals and environment to many toxins, including carcinogens.
